ALCOCHETE – PORTUGAL
Model: CIAO H (DIN type)
Technology: S4 with EASYTECH® static system
Date: August 2025
Client: Alcochete Municipality
Description:
Located on the southern bank of the Tagus river, facing Lisbon skyline, Alcochete Municipality is a peculiar territory: a synthesis between natural landscape, maritime tradition and orderly urban development, balancing between memory and innovation. In this context, where public space quality is considered an essential element of collective living, SANO2 has recently installed a new self-cleaning public toilet, contributing to the municipality mission of offering accessible, functional and sustainable amenities.
Model CIAO H, in its DIN version, complies to technical specifications outlined by Decree-Law No. 163/2006 issued in Portugal by the Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity. This provision defines the “Technical standards to improve accessibility for persons with reduced mobility” and it was adopted by SANO2 as a reference for the Portuguese projects to be destined to inclusive locations. Designing and manufacturing products that comply with the regulations in force in the country of installation is not just a legal obligation for us. It reflects our commitment to ensuring every citizen, regardless of their physical conditions, enjoys a safe, autonomous and dignified user experience.
The toilet ‒ whose precast monoblock made of vibrated reinforced concrete has been manufactured by Prefabbricati Santerno – has been refined ‒ on customer’s request ‒ with RAL7005 quartz painting, in harmony with the surrounding urban environment.
The interior space has been carefully designed to meet the space and manoeuvring needs required by law: the width of the compartment, the free surfaces for lateral and front access to the toilet bowl, the height of its fixtures and the organization of the spaces guarantee full usability even with walking aids.
The structure is equipped with stainless steel furnishings and accessories: toilet bowl, sinks, folding side grab bars and fixed changing table attached to the wall are all durable, hygienic and designed to last in time. The clothes’ hanger hooks are installed at double height to facilitate any type of use. The floor, made of non-slip aluminium slats, includes drainage grills for wastewater collection, ensuring an environment which is dry and safe at all times.
A distinctive feature of this installation is its self-cleaning technology: an S4 configuration equipped with our EASYTECH® static system, specifically chosen by the client to optimize facility management without renouncing to the efficiency of sanitisation processes. Typically featured in S3 technology, the EASYTECH® system has been successfully adapted for use in this S4 technology public toilet ‒ a clear demonstration of SANO2’s design flexibility.
The heart of EASYTECH® system is a stainless steel device integrated in the toilet bowl seatback. After each use, the device initiates an automated cleaning cycle, including a complete washing and disinfection of the toilet bowl, followed a drying process. A second cycle, dedicated entirely to floor cleaning, uses high-pressure water jets ejected from nozzles positioned along the perimeter. The nozzles spray water and detergent at a 45° angle, ensuring a deep and complete coverage of the whole floor area.
The result is a sanitised environment ‒ ready for the next user ‒ in a few seconds, and with no need for human intervention. This system is entirely automated, it contributes to reducing waste and emissions produced by transportation required for manual cleaning, making the entire public toilet management more efficient, eco-friendly and sustainable.
Even concerning public toilet management, the one installed in Alcochete complies with the highest standards. It is equipped with SANO2CONNECT® remote control system, which uses UBIQUITY software. Its connection to a dedicated VPN network, is easily accessible from both desktop and mobile devices. This allows the facility manager to remotely monitor the facility status, the availability of consumables, any alarms, anomalies and consumption, intervening only when necessary. A choice that reduces operating costs and increases the reliability and continuity of the infrastructure.
This installation is not just an additional public toilet: it is the tangible sign of an administration that looks to the future with an inclusive vision, attentive to the well-being of the community and the care for the urban landscape.
In a territory where natural and urban landscapes coexist every day, even a public toilet can become an essential element of a wider idea of hospitality and civilization. It is through here, through these simple, small but significant everyday gestures, that true urban innovation passes. And at SANO2, we are here for it.
