Description:
Among the green and renovated areas of Corso Verdi Gardens, in Gorizia, a SANO2 self-cleaing toilet has recently been installed. This installation ‒ manufactured by Prefabbricati Santerno company, a leader in this sector ‒ is much more than a simple public amenity: it represents a crucial tile in a wider urban regeneration mosaic which is transforming the whole city on the occasion of a historic event. The twin cities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica, on the border between Italy and Slovenia, in fact, have both been proclaimed European Capital of Culture 2025. This event sparked several interventions to upgrade public spaces in order to supply modern and accessible services, well integrated both in urban and natural environment. The project involves administrations, architecture firms, companies and citizens in a widespread, participatory and future-oriented redevelopment process. The Public Gardens of Corso Verdi are one of the symbolic spaces of this transformation and they represent a meeting place as well as a crossroad between the historical city centre and the upper part of the city. The gardens’ restoration ‒ entrusted to the architectural firm Franchi+ASSOCIATI ‒ aims to return a vibrant, historically respectful public space to the community.
The installation of SANO2 public toilet is among the key projects conceived to reach this objective; the architects selected our model DIVO H, equipped with S5 self-cleaning technology, to meet the need for accessibility, continuity of service and integration in the architectural and natural context.
At the basis of this intervention there is a great attention to visual language and coherence with the environment. This public toilet features our London design, one of the most modern and refined aesthetic solutions of SANO2 range, entirely customisable.
Its structure—made of painted, galvanized sheet metal with clean, contemporary lines— has been enriched with a laser cut based on the architects’ original design, which reproduces silhouettes of the leaves of plane tree, poplar and maple, along with other native trees from the park. During the day, these shapes create an elegant play of light and shadow. At night, the LED backlight illuminates them, transforming the facility into an evocative visual signal. The result is a public toilet which does not merely occupy space ‒ it also expresses it. A discreet yet recognisable presence, serving the community, active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
From a technical standpoint, this public toilet represents one of the most evolved solutions for hygiene in public areas. S5 technology envisages an automatic cleaning cycle less than a minute long, entrusted to SLEDTECH® system, together with SCRUBBER®, a suspended, mobile device, for floor drying. Occupancy detection is managed through electronic weight-sensitive floor sensors and infrared technology: safety for users is a key point among the SANO2 values.
The installation of this public toilet in Gorizia has a significance far beyond its primary function. In a historical moment when the city welcomes people from all over Europe, any design choice is indeed a message. In this particular case it is very clear: welcoming, liveable spaces are built through quality, accessible and stylistically integrated public services. The SANO2 public toilet in Gorizia is a living part of an evolved, inclusive and sustainable urban vision.
