Description:
A transforming city: on the occasion of the Jubilee 2025, Roma Capitale has launched a major urban redevelopment project aimed at improving the reception of the millions of pilgrims expected in the Eternal City. Among the planned interventions – scattered throughout the city – is the renovation of one hundred public toilets, which are essential infrastructures to ensure decorum, hygiene, and a positive urban experience.
In this context, SANO2 stands out as the sole company chosen to supply and install self-cleaning toilets, representing excellence in the field of public innovation.
SANO2 supplied seven self-cleaning toilets: Giubileo2025Spa selected the TECH model equipped with S4 technology. This solution is designed for the redevelopment of indoor spaces and has been provided in both the unisex version – mod. S4 TECH N – and mod. S4 TECH H, designed for people affected by motor disabilities.
The toilets ‒ whose structures were produceded by Prefabbricati Santerno‒have been installed in four strategic areas of high archaeological and architectural value:
- Two automatic S4 TECH H toilets have been installed at the propylaea of Villa Pamphili, near Porta San Pancrazio.
- Two units have been placed on Via Valle delle Camene, in front of the Baths of Caracalla, near the Circus Maximus. Of these two toilets, one is accessible to everyone, while the other is available for able-bodied users.
- Two integrated toilets for people with reduced mobility have been placed in the historic context of Villa Celimontana, within the small building already designated for services.
- One self-cleaning S4 TECH H toilet has been installed in the historic building of Villa Paganini.
Thanks to the advanced S4 technology, these facilities have been transformed into modern, fully automated public toilets equipped with a washing, disinfection, and drying system that activates after each use, completing the cleaning cycle in less than 35 seconds. The installation followed an architectural recovery principle aimed at rehabilitating pre-existing buildings that had long been abandoned. This approach has not only reduced the environmental impact of the intervention, but it has also preserved the high historical value of the settings where the toilets were placed, allowing them to seamlessly integrate into any environment.
Among all the public toilets renovated for the Jubilee, these seven solutions are the only ones offering automated sanitation mechanisms—a crucial added value in an era where hygiene and safety are top priorities.
To ensure always-efficient service, SANO2 has planned a maintenance program of at least three years, with dedicated personnel responsible for toilet inspections and the supply of consumable materials. Furthermore, all self-cleaning toilets are monitored through SANO2-CONNECT®, SANO2’s exclusive telemetry system that collects and analyzes usage data to optimize management and reduce waste, as well as guaranteeing free software updates for the entire maintenance period.
The installation of SANO2 self-cleaning toilets for Jubilee 2025 has marked an important step in modernizing public sanitation services and strengthening the cultural image of the city of Rome.
Public toilets are an expression of civilization and an indicator of a city’s hospitality quality—a key element of the urban landscape capable of influencing the experience of both citizens and visitors. According to Rem Koolhaas, a renowned Dutch architect, urban planner, and essayist, toilets are “the fundamental zone of interaction—at the most intimate level—between humans and architecture”.
In Rome, SANO2 has promoted a new vision of urban life through concrete action that, beyond the Jubilee 2025 context, translates into a tangible contribution to the capital’s future.
